Lobero Theatre

Client: Lobero Theatre
Location: Santa Barbara, CA
Role: Designer

The Lobero Theatre is California’s oldest, continuously operating theatre. First founded in 1873 and rebuilt in 1924, it is recognized as “one of Santa Barbara’s architectural jewels” and is a State and City landmark. A comprehensive donor program was developed to fit in with the iconic architecture and adapt to the growing list of donors and campaigns over the years. A number of different design options were proposed, ranging from ornate to contemporary. The chosen design felt most at home in the space, mimicking shapes and textures found throughout the theatre, including the ceiling. GNU Group worked with a local Santa Barbara iron worker to design and create the final frames, and a local wood carver to create the crest placed in the gallery wall.
